the theatrical performance
“Stories of Escaping Animals”

Eleven short tragicomedies based on Don Nigro’s play “Animal Stories”,
in an artistic adaptation by the theater.

Director: Maksym Iievliev

The performance is in Ukrainian with German subtitles.

“Stories of Escaping Animals” consists of eleven short plays — eleven piercing stories and more than a dozen characters: platypuses, mice, chipmunks, cats, turkeys, and other animals who are searching for their place and trying to adapt to a new, unfamiliar society.

They resemble humans in many ways, yet what they share are deeply personal themes and fears that people rarely voice aloud. Their escape is forced — but perhaps they are also running away from themselves?

This performance is presented by LUFT, a new Ukrainian theater based in Lübeck. It is contemporary theater that invites attentive listening.

LUFT is a community of Ukrainians who came together in Lübeck and created a theater from scratch. The theater began as an educational studio focused on artistic therapy and later evolved into a full-fledged theater company with experience in staging performances and concerts.

In its work, the ensemble reinterprets classical narratives through the lens of the contemporary experiences of Ukrainians living in Germany. Performances are presented in Ukrainian and accompanied by German subtitles to overcome the language barrier. LUFT positions itself as a space for cultural encounter, where Ukrainian and German traditions enrich one another.

The theater’s future plans include new productions, touring across German cities, and the development of festival activities.
